Work day: 08/01/2023 (Sunday)

Happy New Year everyone!

We will be meeting at 10.00 a.m. at the entrance in Woodland Way and the task for the day will be to start coppicing the Hazel Plantation located at the junction of the top path and the path leading down to Northwood Avenue. It was last coppiced in 2009 and coppicing is a traditional woodland management technique to ensure the wood is maintained in a healthy and sustainable state. The area to be coppiced is a large area and it’s likely the coppicing will take up to three working days to complete and it would therefore be useful to have as many chainsaw operators as possible on site to help with the felling work. The area will rapidly regenerate with the coppiced stools quickly sending up new shoots and on the second work day in February 80 to 100 Hazel whips are scheduled to be planted between the coppiced stools to increase the density of the plantation. The whips will be supplied by CGI UK Ltd. (an IT and Business Consulting Company) whose volunteers will also be helping with the planting of the whips.
